Provocative With Plastic
By Falene Nurse
My favorite type of men have always been the imaginary kind.
So when I heard there was a singer with her own band based on that very premise—I was obviously delighted.
Jessie Malakouti is a native angeleno. Which when it comes to L.A. based musicians, is truly a creature rarer than the unicorn.
At only 23 years of age, in many ways she’s been on the road since she was 15. With her very own set of traveller’s tales to tell, both musically and professionally. Initially a successful dancer (in music videos and commercials), she started out in all-girl, sweaty-rock-rap-outfit,”Shut Up Stella.” If the group’s name was any indicator, perhaps it was inevitable that Jessie—who had always been the sole architect of her own invention—was destined for band members of a more plastic persuasion. And as her personal headspace began to evolve, so too did her creativity and musical tastes. She realized quickly she had a very different path in mind, one that no longer involved “angry music”—but instead raucous, risque and irreverent pop. A decision that proved to serve her well; since then she’s performed on Conan, been featured in Rolling Stone and Music Connection, toured with Britney, teamed up with YelaWolf, and her latest track was used on Dancing With The Stars.
Not bad for the imaginative So Cal gal inspired by Blond Ambition and a mannequin fetish.
